In the school photography industry, photographers sometimes import their images with a color profile different from sRGB IEC61966-2.1.

At first glance, this may seem inconsequential: the images often look correct on the photographer's screen. However, using another color profile can lead to significant color variations at several stages:

  • the display of images on different devices,

  • the generation of files within the platform,

  • the printing and production of photos.

To ensure a consistent and predictable result throughout the production workflow, all images imported into PixFirst must be converted to sRGB IEC61966-2.1 before import.

Understanding Color Profiles

What is a color profile? A color profile is a set of instructions that defines how the colors stored in an image should be interpreted.

When an image contains a specific color (for example, a shade of red), the profile answers a simple question: which exact red should be displayed or printed?

Without an adapted color profile, or with an inappropriate profile, the same device may display this color differently from another.

What is a gamut? The term gamut refers to the range of colors that a color space can represent.

A simple way to picture it: each color space is like a box of a different size. A small box contains a limited number of colors; a larger box can contain more. Here are the most common color spaces, from the most standard to the widest gamut: sRGB (standard), Adobe RGB (wider), and ProPhoto RGB (very wide).

The wider the gamut, the more saturated colors it can represent. But a wider gamut is not always an advantage.

Why sRGB Has Become the Universal Standard

The sRGB color space was designed to be interpreted consistently by the vast majority of devices, including:

  • smartphones,

  • tablets,

  • Windows PCs,

  • Mac computers,

  • web browsers,

  • televisions,

  • photo kiosks,

  • professional photo labs,

  • printing systems.

Today, when images are published online or sent to a lab, sRGB is generally considered the reference color space. It is for this reason that PixFirst requires its use.

What Happens with Another Profile?

Case #1: Adobe RGB. Adobe RGB has a wider gamut than sRGB. It allows photographers to work with a broader range of colors, especially on calibrated professional monitors.

But when an Adobe RGB image is displayed on a device that does not fully support color management:

  • colors may appear dull or washed out,

  • reds and greens may lose intensity,

  • the image as a whole may seem less vivid.

Result: two people looking at the same image on two different devices may see a noticeably different result.

Case #2: ProPhoto RGB. ProPhoto RGB has an even wider gamut than Adobe RGB. It is primarily used for advanced photo editing and professional workflows.

The difficulty is as follows:

  • very few screens can reproduce its entire range of colors,

  • most display and printing systems do not operate natively in ProPhoto RGB.

A conversion to another color space therefore becomes necessary at some point in the workflow, and each conversion introduces a risk of visual variation in the image.

Impact within PixFirst

When images are imported with a color space other than sRGB:

  • bright reds,

  • vivid greens.

The final rendering may thus differ from what the photographer initially saw on their screen.

Why Can Conversion Modify Colors?

Because some color spaces contain colors that do not exist within the sRGB gamut.

When a color exists in Adobe RGB or ProPhoto RGB but is outside the sRGB range, the system must find the closest possible equivalent. This process is called gamut compression or gamut mapping.

A useful analogy: trying to fit a large object into a smaller box. Some adjustments become necessary, and some details must be approximated. These changes are often subtle, but they can become visible on certain images.

Potential Risks in Production

Using a color profile other than sRGB can lead to:

  • discrepancies between the original image and the final print,

  • colors that are less vivid or more saturated than expected,

  • differences between the screen preview and the printed product,

  • customer complaints,

  • increased support and troubleshooting workload.

In the vast majority of cases, these problems disappear once the images are correctly converted to sRGB before import.

Best Practices for Photographers

Before importing images to PixFirst:

  • Convert all images to sRGB IEC61966-2.1

  • Embed the ICC profile in the exported file

  • Check export settings in Lightroom, Photoshop, or any other editing software

  • Perform a visual quality check after export
